Disabling the "autoplay" facility in Windows XP

The "autoplay" facility that operates when users insert new media such as a CD or DVD, or a USB drive can be disabled as follows:

  1. Select Start > Run
  2. Type gpedit.msc and select OK as follows:



    This runs an application called Group Policy Editor.
  3. Select Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System from under Local Computer Policy selection in the left hand panel:



  4. Scroll down to and double click on Turn off Autoplay in the right hand panel to display the following dialogue window:
     


  5. Select Enabled then select the drives for which autoplay should be disabled (All Drives).
  6. Click OK, then exit the Group Policy Editor application.
